How FPL bonus points work: the BPS, ties, and what changed for 2026/27

Every player in a match gets a bonus points system (BPS) score. The top three earn 3, 2 and 1 bonus points. Bonus now shows live from the 20th minute and is confirmed at 09:00 UK time the next morning.

Updated 20 October 2026

The basics

The bonus points system gives each player a score from his match stats: goals, assists, clean sheets, saves, passes, defensive actions and more. After the match, the highest BPS score gets 3 bonus points, second gets 2 and third gets 1.

Bonus is a ranking inside one match. A defender's bonus depends on whether his team kept a clean sheet, and two players from the same side compete for the same 3-2-1.

How ties work

  • Tie for first: both get 3, the next player gets 1
  • Tie for second: first gets 3, both tied players get 2
  • Tie for third: first gets 3, second gets 2, both tied players get 1
  • More than three players can get bonus in the same match

When are bonus points added?

From 2026/27, projected bonus shows in live scores from the 20th minute of each match and can change as the game goes on.

Bonus is confirmed later than before: at 09:00 UK time on the morning after the match, instead of an hour after full time. This gives the stats provider time to review the data, so fewer bonus points are missed.

What changed in the BPS for 2026/27

  • Players no longer lose BPS for being tackled. This helps wingers, attacking midfielders and attacking full-backs who carry the ball
  • Clearances, blocks and interceptions now earn 1 BPS for every three, up from every two
  • Every goalkeeper save now earns 2 BPS; the separate outside-the-box save measure has gone
  • Keepers earn an extra 1 BPS for saving a big chance
  • A penalty save is worth 7 BPS (down from 8), plus the big-chance point

What it means for picking players

Players who score and assist still dominate bonus. The changes slightly favour attackers who dribble a lot and slightly reduce how often centre-backs pick up both bonus and defensive contribution points in the same game.

Our model ranks a BPS-style score for every player inside each simulated match and awards 3, 2 and 1, so bonus in our projections follows the same match-by-match logic.
